Available cash stays in its account. Enter cash once, either here or as an asset holding. Retirement cash is assumed already inside the account; contribution limits and eligibility are not checked. Trades within retirement accounts have no current capital-gains tax; their basis entries are bookkeeping only.

Calculating current trades and taxes…

How it works›

Trade selection and account boundaries. Cash is invested proportionally into global target shortfalls, with integer-cent reconciliation. Sales then use overweight holdings in tax-sheltered accounts before taxable lots. Taxable lots are ordered by gain per sale dollar, with long-term lots first for equal ratios. Proceeds buy underweight assets within the same account. This deterministic heuristic is not a globally optimal tax-lot or asset-location optimizer. No cash transfers, withdrawal taxes, spreads, fees, trade restrictions, minimum shares or orders are modeled.

Tax budget and eligible losses. The tax-budget approach limits incremental current-year tax relative to the entered baseline; taxes are paid outside the portfolio. Short- and long-term gains are netted, then eligible net losses may offset up to $3,000 of other income. Loss eligibility must be confirmed before applying any loss offsets. Wash sales can arise from substantially identical purchases within 30 days before or after a sale, including in IRAs; this worksheet cannot identify them. Existing gains, carryforwards and special assets such as collectibles are excluded. Federal parameters remain the reviewed 2026 snapshot; state tax is your flat-rate assumption.IRS Publication 550: basis, capital gains and wash salesIRS: Net Investment Income Tax
