The Earned Income Credit is a refundable tax credit for low to moderate-income workers. The credit amount depends on your income, filing status, and number of qualifying children.

How it works›

Eligibility. Confirm valid Social Security numbers, U.S. residency/citizenship requirements, dependent and qualifying-child tests, and all other Pub. 596 rules. Separate filers, self-employment adjustments, clergy, combat-pay elections, and special separated-spouse cases require the IRS worksheets. The age test without a qualifying child can be met by either joint filer.

Method and sources. Estimate from IRS Publication 596 Worksheet A and its $50 income-table convention; 2026 parameters are from Revenue Procedure 2025-32. Earned income provides the phase-in; earned income and AGI govern phase-out. Confirm against the final IRS table when filing.
