Umbrella Liability Sizer
Compare assets and future earnings with your underlying liability policies, then size an umbrella from the limits you can actually buy.

A sizing estimate, not an insurance quote or legal determination. Retirement-account protection depends on account type and state law; both assumptions are shown. Confirm exclusions and offered limits with your adviser and insurer.
Assets to protect
Exempt assets are capped at the non-retirement total. State selection does not infer any exemption.
Future earnings assumption
Wages × years until retirement × your share. No wage growth, discounting or statutory garnishment percentage is assumed.
Underlying policies and available umbrella
Comma-separated, for example 1, 2, 5 means $1m, $2m, $5m. Replace the illustrative list with your insurer’s options. Initial underlying amounts use one GEICO example; enter your actual limits.
Risk buffer — your heuristic
Select relevant risks and enter a positive buffer for each. This amount is your planning assumption, not an actuarial or legal rule.

How it works›
Exposure and earnings. Add non-exempt assets and your selected share of wages through retirement. Compare retirement accounts fully protected and fully exposed. This is a planning range; a judgment can exceed assets and earnings. State and account type affect creditor protection, and the calculator makes no legal exemption determination.Travelers: assets and earnings
Underlying policies. Subtract each applicable underlying limit from exposure separately, take the largest gap, then round up to an entered available umbrella limit. Home and auto limits are never added together. A covered claim, carrier requirements, exclusions and any retained limit still depend on your contracts; a policy with insufficient underlying coverage can leave a separate gap.NAIC: umbrella coverageGEICO: underlying requirements example
Heuristics and available limits. Risk selections add the same user-entered buffer for each checked factor. These amounts and the future-wage share are assumptions, not calibrated loss forecasts. The initial million-dollar list is illustrative; only an insurer can confirm the options and coverage available to you. No premiums are estimated.Texas DOI: liability risksAllstate: common limits
